Last Friday, Lanny Bergner gave a refreshing, thorough, and honest lecture on the development of his career as an artist. His prolific, 30 year long exploration of wire mesh left many feeling inspired. More than once, students were heard saying, “I didn’t know you could do that with mesh!” Following the lecture, attendees made their way to the art gallery to see the Screenplay exhibition, curated by Tina Lazzarine, and hosted by East Carolina University’s Student Activities Board Visual Arts Committee, chaired by Kate Harris, a senior in Textile Design at ECU. If you were not able to make it to Greenville last Friday, don’t despair…a video of Lanny’s lecture will soon be available to view on The Arts Connection, a website devoted to sharing information about visual arts events taking place in the Pitt County, NC area.
The Screenplay prize winners carefully selected by guest Awards Juror Lanny Bergner are as follows:
First Place: Anna Miller for Choose to Arise, An Offered Hand, and Phantasm #3
Second Place: Mary Chuduk for NIQAB
Third Place: Dennis Nahabetian for Vessel #95
ECU Student Award: Joshua Craig for Fenced in #1
In conjunction with the Screenplay exhibition, visiting artist, awards juror, and lecturer Lanny Bergner demonstrates how he works with wire mesh and glass frit at East Carolina University’s School of Art and Design. Students and faculty alike were able to watch Lanny’s direct approach of working with this versatile material. After sharing his process, the group joined in for a bit of hands-on “meshing around.”
